How to Prepare for Your First Escape Room

Your first escape room is usually an hour of focused teamwork, not a test. A little preparation helps you relax and enjoy it.

At Treforest Escape Rooms, we brief every group before the clock starts. These tips are what we tell first-timers who want to get the most from their slot.

Arrive a few minutes early

Aim for 10–15 minutes before your booking. That gives you time to check in, hear the safety briefing, and settle in before the story starts.

Rushing in at the last minute is the one puzzle you do not need.

Wear comfortable clothes

You will not be running, but you may need to bend, crouch, or reach behind furniture. Casual, practical clothing works best. Leave the heels at home.

Keep puzzles simple

Escape rooms are built around observation, logic, and teamwork. Not obscure trivia. If a solution feels wildly complicated, step back and look again. The answer is usually simpler than you think.

Talk to your team

Found a key? Say it out loud. Spotted a symbol? Tell the room. Clues often connect across the space, and quiet teams miss links that loud teams catch early.

Share everything, even if it seems minor. Your teammate may have just found the piece that makes it click.

Split up, then regroup

At the start, spread out to search efficiently. When you have findings, pull together and compare notes. If someone is stuck on a puzzle, let another person try. Fresh eyes help.

Most rooms are designed for groups, not solo heroes.

Ask for a hint

There is no shame in asking. Our game masters nudge you in the right direction without spoiling the room. A well-timed hint keeps the hour moving and the tension where it should be.

Lean into the story

Each room at Treforest has its own setting. A vault heist, a mine rescue, a gallery mystery. Treat it like a short film you are inside, not a maths exam.

Players who engage with the theme usually remember the experience long after the timer stops.

Come curious, communicate openly, and do not worry about escaping on your first try. Plenty of teams use hints and still have a brilliant hour.
