Free-Roam VR Safety & Comfort Guide

Our VR escape games at Treforest use free-roam virtual reality. You wear a headset and walk around a dedicated play space while your team explores a digital world together. It is immersive and active, but very different from our live escape rooms. This guide covers what to expect, how to stay comfortable, and when to take a break.

What free-roam VR means

You move on your feet in a real, bounded arena. Not sitting in a chair with a controller. In the headset you might be in a prison, a manor, or on the moon, but physically you are still in our Treforest venue. Your host briefs you before kit-up, shows you the play area, and stays nearby throughout the session.

Walk. Don’t run

VR can feel exciting enough to make you want to sprint. Please walk, not run. You cannot see the real room while you are in the headset, so sudden movement makes bumps and trips more likely. For you and anyone playing beside you. Keep a sensible pace and stay aware of your play space boundaries.

Headset safety and fit

We adjust every headset before you start. Tell us if it feels too tight, slips, or presses on your face - comfort matters more than rushing in. Remove glasses only if we advise it; we can usually fit headsets around them. If the headset fogged up, feels wrong, or you feel unwell at any point, stop and raise your hand. We can pause, refit, or take the headset off entirely. No one has to push through discomfort to “finish the game.”

Eye strain, dizziness, and breaks

Most players feel fine throughout. Eye strain, mild dizziness, or motion sensitivity in VR is uncommon, though it can happen on a first visit. If it does, it is nothing to be embarrassed about. Take a break whenever you need one. We can pause the session, give you water, and let you sit out for a few minutes while the rest of your group continues. If symptoms do not settle quickly, we will end your turn early rather than push on.

Play-space rules

Stay inside the play area we show you at briefing. Do not lean on or walk into the walls, and do not try to leave without help. Your host will guide you out when the session ends. Keep controllers or tracked equipment secure; swinging arms wildly is unnecessary for most puzzles and increases the chance of knocking into another player or equipment.

Age and supervision

VR games at Treforest are suitable for players aged 12 and over. All players under 18 must have an adult on site at all times. That adult does not have to play, but they must remain at the venue. See our FAQs for full age rules across live rooms and VR.

When to contact us before you book

VR is not suitable for everyone. If you have epilepsy, severe motion sickness, a recent head injury, are pregnant, or have concerns about balance or vision, please contact us before booking so we can advise honestly. For live physical escape rooms (no headset), read our separate escape room safety guide.

Most groups settle in within a few minutes and have a brilliant time. When you are ready, browse our VR escape games or book a session.
